Endodermis

Return

The endodermis is innermost layer of the cortex of a root. The cells of this tissue layer have a ring of suberin around their cell walls called a casparian strip that effectively stops apoplastic movement between the cortex and the vascular cylinder. In older roots, some of these cells form a water proof secondary wall (a suberin lamella), which stops the transcellualr movement of water across the endodermis.
