The step by step pathways of respiration and photosynthesis differ greatly. However, the overal process of respiration is the perfect receprical to the process of photosynthesis. Surprisingly, the significance of plants in producing a gas necessary for animal life has only been known since the eighteenth century. Then Joseph Priestly, while still encumbered with the phlogiston theory of heat, astutely observed.....

 

The injury which is continually done to the atmosphere by the respiration of such a large number of animals...is, in part at least, repaired by the vegetable creation.
