Key Characters: Trees with opposite, pinnately compound leaves: is easily distinguished from hickory as hickory has alternate leaves. Can be distinguished from box elder, in that box elder's leaves usually have five or fewer leaflets (most commonly three). Also, during September, ash has a well developed, conical terminal bud.
