Parthenocissus

return

Key Characteristics: Vines. The non-cultivated member of this genus (Parthenocissus quinquifolia), on campus, has alternately arranged palmately compound leaves. The vine covering Birge hall (Boston ivy Parthenocissus tricuspidata) is also in this genus, but is not represented in our key (it usually has simple leaves).

Viginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquifolia): In Bascom Woods, Virginia creeper often forms short shoots from the ground bearing two to four leaves. At the arboretum , we will see thick vines clinging to bark by emerging roots.

Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) is a common cultivar growing on the walls of buildings on campus. Most leaves are simple and palmately veined, however, palmately compound leaves, while rare can be found in this species.
